CHAIN,BLOCK

A power transmission chain, consisting of laminated or solid blocks and alternate side plates held together by pins and designed in such a manner as to conform to the teeth of a sprocket wheel over which it runs.

CHAIN,SILENT

A flexible mechanical device consisting of inverted tooth links, with or without guide links, and used for power transmission. The links are joined by pins and mate with the sprocket teeth with a sliding action. Excludes flexible mechanical devices specifically designed for use with COUPLING, SHAFT, FLEXIBLE.

SPROCKET WHEEL

A toothed wheel whose teeth or sprockets are designed to be engaged with the links of a pitch chain, track, or the like. It is usually used for transmitting power.

CHAIN,ROLLER

A flexible mechanical device consisting of one or more rows of links used for conveying or power transmission. The link side plates are flat or offset and are spaced apart by rollers, bushings and/or pins. The chain mates with a sprocket with an articulating action. The non-rotating bushing type chain is limited to that designated by the American National Standards Institute as "roller chain". Excludes CHAIN, BLOCK.

CLIP,SPRING,CHAIN

A platelike retaining spring which snaps over pin ends to lock the link plates of drive chain in place.

LINK SET,CONNECTING AND OFFSET,ROLLER CHAIN

Two separate connecting devices consisting of a LINK, DETACHABLE LINK CHAIN and LINK, ROLLER CHAIN not assembled as a combination link.

LINK,ROLLER CHAIN

An assembled unit of a CHAIN, ROLLER consisting of side plates, roller(s), bushing(s), or pin(s). It may be a single or double pitch. Links containing bushings without rollers shall be as designated by the American National Standards Institute as "roller chain." Excludes LINK, CHAIN (as modified); and PULLEY, SASH.

PLATE,CHAIN LINK

A side bar of various shapes forming one of the tension members of a pin link, roller chain link, or silent chain link.

GEAR RACK

A bar-like item with gear teeth on one face for engaging with a spur, bevel, or worm gear, or the like. It is specifically designed for straight line motion.

GEAR,BEVEL

A gear in the form of a frustum of a cone, with straight, skewed, or curved teeth, cut on the external face. See also GEAR, ANTIBACKLASH, BEVEL.

GEAR,HELICAL

A gear, cylindrical in form, with teeth on the outer surface at an angle to the axis of the gear. See also GEAR, ANTIBACKLASH, HELICAL:

GEAR,INTERNAL

A gear with teeth formed on the inner surface of a cylinder or cone.

GEAR,SPUR

A gear, cylindrical in form, with straight teeth on the outer surface parallel to the axis of the gear. See also GEAR, ANTIBACKLASH, SPUR. For bulk material, see ROD, PINION.

GEAR,WORM

A gear with teeth on its outer surface in the form of helical threads.

GEAR,WORM WHEEL

A gear, cylindrical in form, with spiral teeth designed to mesh with the thread forms of a GEAR (1), WORM. See also GEAR, ANTIBACKLASH, WORM WHEEL.

PULLEY,GROOVE

A pulley with one or more grooved faces or rims of the same diameter. For pulleys encased in a shell or frame, see BLOCK, TACKLE.For items specifically designed for aviation, see PULLEY(1), GROOVE, AVIATION.

PULLEY,CONE

A pulley having two or more adjoining grooved, flat or crowned faces in steps of different diameters or one having a single tapered face. For pulleys encased in a shell or frame, see BLOCK, TACKLE.

PULLEY,FLAT

A pulley with a straight or crowned face. The item may include belt aligning flange(s). Excludes PULLEY, CONE. For pulleys encased in a shell or frame, see BLOCK, TACKLE.

PULLEY,ENGINE STARTER ROPE

A grooved or flat faced pulley having one or more notches in the rim or flange for attaching a rope or cable for the purpose of cranking an engine.

ROD,PINION

A solid, cylindrically shaped item having a uniform cross section throughout its entire length with a 360 degree complement of straight, spur type teeth on its periphery. Refers to bulk material only. For items having a bore, hub, or mounting facilities, see GEAR, SPUR.

GEAR SET,BEVEL,MATCHED

A grouping of two or more or any combination of GEAR, BEVEL; GEARSHAFT, BEVEL; or GEAR CLUSTER, BEVEL which have been matched together for a given characteristic within a specified tolerance. Includes only those gears designed and tested to accomplish a specifically desired function.

Upon installation with the mating gear, the teeth of the free moving gear are preset to mesh with teeth other than those of the fixed gear. This spring tension between the fixed gear and the free gear eliminates any free motion between the driver and the driven gear. The gear is used where identical and accurate transmitted motion between gears is required.

A cylindrical shoulder type item designed to be mounted and secured directly on a shaft or axle to position and retain on its body a gear(s), wheel(s), or the like. Items must have a method of securing directly to the shaft; however, a pilot hole drilled in or through the wall of the shoulder may be considered a method of securing; or by compressing the slotted hub end on the shaft by a hub clamp, which may or may not be included. CHAIN,DETACHABLE LINK

A flexible mechanical device consisting of cast or stamped links without pins, bushings or rollers. The links may be assembled or disassembled when flexed to an acute angle.

CHAIN,PINTLE

A flexible mechanical device consisting of links, with offset sidebars and rollerless bushings cast as one piece. The links are coupled with pins.

LINK,DETACHABLE LINK CHAIN

A component of a CHAIN, DETACHABLE LINK consisting of a single cast or stamped piece. One end serves as a rollerless bushing and the other end as a pin. They may be assembled or disassembled when flexed to an acute angle.

LINK,PINTLE CHAIN

A component of a CHAIN, PINTLE consisting of offset sidebars and a rollerless bushing cast as one piece. The end opposite the rollerless bushing contains a connecting pin.

CHAIN,LEAF

A flexible mechanical device consisting of flat leaf plates assembled with pins or rivets to form a chain. The chain uses a flanged sheave in lieu of a sprocket. Each end has a termination hole through which securing pins are inserted when the chain terminations are attached. Excludes CHAIN, SILENT; and CHAIN, BLOCK.

GEAR SECTOR,INTERNAL

A gear sector with teeth formed on the inner surface.

GEAR CLUSTER

A cylindrical item having a full 360 degree (6.282 radians) complement of teeth on two or more surfaces. It may be a one-piece casting or composed of two or more separate items firmly held together by welding, rivets, pins, or the like, to form a single unit. It is designed to mount on a shaft. For items consisting of a shaft with an integral complement(s) or gear teeth, see GEARSHAFT (as modified). Excludes GEAR SUBASSEMBLY, SPEED DECREASER.

REPAIR KIT,CABLE CHAIN

GEAR SECTOR CLUSTER

A toothed device resembling a portion of a gear containing two or more complements of teeth. Each has fewer than 360 degrees (6.282 radians) of gear teeth. Excludes GEAR SECTOR (1), (as modified), GEAR RACK and RATCHET WHEEL.

PULLEY,TIMING BELT

A pulley with regularly spaced grooves parallel to the pulley axis on the face. It is designed to be used for timing purposes such as to synchronize the igintion spark with the completion of the compression stroke of the piston.

SPROCKET SHAFT

An item consisting of a shaft and one or more integral SPROCKET WHEEL.

GEAR AND SHAFT ASSEMBLY,BEVEL

An unenclosed assembly of a bevel gear(s) and a shaft(s). The gear(s) and shaft(s) must be capable of being separated from each other. Excludes GEARSHAFT (as modified) and GEAR CLUSTER (as modified).

LINK,LEAF CHAIN

A metal item which consists of two pins riveted to one outer plate. It may include inner and outer plates in bulk. It is designed to connect CHAIN, LEAF.

CASE,CHAIN

A device designed to totally enclose a driving chain and may incorporate oil bath or other lubrication features.

CHAIN ASSEMBLY,ROLLER

A specific length of non-reversible roller chain with end fittings. For items without end fittings see CHAIN, ROLLER.

ANCHOR,CHAIN

A metallic device designed to secure various styles of chain by use of a link and pin(s). Item may be threaded on one end.

INSERT,PULLEY

A circular item of various configurations consisting of one or more pieces. It is designed to accomodate different size cables on trawler/core and oceanographic winches.

GEAR,DRIVE MOTION

A gear, cylindrical or conical in form, with teeth on the outer surface used for the accurate transmission of motion.

GEAR ASSEMBLY,WORM

An assembled unit consisting of a worm type gear, bearing(s), coupler(s), coupling(s), and all necessary mounting hardware.

GEAR,RING,FLYWHEEL

An item designed to transmit motion from the starter to the flywheel in an engine.

RATCHET WHEEL

A circular wheel having teeth with which a reciprocating pawl engages to turn the wheel forward and prevent backward motion, or a stationary pawl which engages the wheel to prevent backward motion.

GUARD,MECHANICAL DRIVE

A safety device fabricated of rigid or semirigid material formed in various shapes. It may be fabricated from a single piece of material, and contains brackets, holes, or other means of attachments. It is designed to partially or fully inclose gear(s), pulley(s), sprocket(s), and the like.

PIN,BELT LACING

A round, twisted or corrugated item, used as a connector for the ends of a belt by passing through center of meshed, curved ends of steel hooks imbedded in belt ends to produce an endless belt for power transmission.

A strip cut from tanned or untanned animal hide, the width being greater than the thickness, and used to join the ends of a conveyor or driving belt. Excludes LACING, BELT, PIN; and LACES, FOOTWEAR.

BELT FASTENER,PLATE

An item consisting of two plates with bolt holes, and sufficient bolts and nuts to form, when assembled, a single belt fastening unit. Used in series with other such units to fasten together ends of power transmission or conveyor belts and to repair belt rips.

A factory matched set of two or more belts.

BELT,POSITIVE DRIVE

A flat internally toothed belt or a round belt with protuding pins, designed to engage with corresponding teeth or corresponding grooves on the sprockets over which they run.

CONTROL ASSEMBLY,PUSH-PULL

A control consisting of a wire, wire rope, or a center load rail with ball bearings, within a flexible conduit. One end must have a threaded sleeve for mounting to a wall, bulkhead, or handle, or clevis. It is used to operate or control, either manually or mechanically a mechanical device. COOLER,FLUID,TRANSMISSION

An apparatus designed to lower the temperature of the fluid in power transmission equipment by bringing it into proximity with another fluid of lower temperature so that heat transfer is effected by conduction through the walls of separating chambers. Excludes air conditioning equipment, refrigeration equipment, and radiators.

BRAKE,DUAL DISK

A brake consisting essentially of the following: a. A single piece or divided cylinder housing designed to be mounted on the torque flange of an axle. The cylinder housing has a slot or groove through which the DISK, BRAKE passes. It contains a piston(s) or push rod(s) which provides the hydraulic or mechanical force to press the LINING, FRICTION against the DISK, BRAKE. b. LINING, FRICTION. c. Two DISK, BRAKE designed to be keyed or rigidly attached to a wheel or rotating shaft.

BRAKE,SINGLE DISK

A brake consisting essentially of the following: a. A single piece or divided cylinder housing designed to be mounted on the torque flange of an axle. The cylinder housing has a slot or groove through which the DISK, BRAKE passes. It contains a piston(s) or push rod(s) which provides the hydraulic or mechanical force to press the LINING, FRICTION against the DISK, BRAKE. b. LINING, FRICTION. c. A DISK, BRAKE designed to be keyed or rigidly attached to a wheel or rotating shaft.

BRAKE,EXPANDER TUBE

A brake consisting essentially of the following: a. A frame designed to fit over and be attached to the torque flange of the axle, and having provisions for housing an expander tube and brake blocks. b. An expander tube which is a flat rubber tube designed to be filled with brake fluid and thereby force brake blocks against the brake drum. c. Brake blocks which may be cemented to the expander tube or fitted into the frame above the expander tube.

BRAKE,MULTIPLE DISK

A brake consisting essentially of the following: a. A brake anchor bracket, also called a carrier assembly, which is the basic unit of the brake. It is designed to be attached to the torque flange of the axle and is also the part upon which the other components of the brake are assembled. b. A floating hydraulically actuated annular piston, or an equivalent mechanical device, used for applying braking pressure. c. Metallic disks keyed to rotate with the wheel alternated with nonrotating disks keyed to the anchor bracket. See also BRAKE, SEGMENTED ROTOR.

BRAKE,SEGMENTED ROTOR

A brake consisting essentially of the following: a. A brake anchor bracket, also called a carrier assembly, which is the basic unit of the brake. It is designed to be attached to the torque flange of the axle and is also the part upon which the other components of the brake are assembled. b. A floating hydraulically actuated annular piston, or an equivalent mechanical device, used for applying braking pressure. c. Segments of brake lining attached to the nonrotating disks.

BRAKE,SHOE TYPE

A brake consisting essentially of the following: a. A torque spider which is a disklike metal part designed to fit over and be attached to the torque flange of the axle. b. One or more brake shoes with brake lining attached. c. A hydraulic cylinder(s) or mechanical linkage to provide the force by which the brake shoe is pressed against the brake drum.

SHAFTING,FLEXIBLE

An item consisting of consecutive layers of wire, wound in opposite directions, one upon the other, to obtain extreme flexibility, either with or without an inclosing casing. It is designed to transmit power or to operate remote controls by rotary motion. This is bulk shafting only and does not include flexible shafts with attachments or special terminations.

CORE,FLEXIBLE SHAFT ASSEMBLY

A specific length of SHAFTING, FLEXIBLE with squared end(s) and/or crimped on tip(s) with or without fittings attached, designed so as to function inside the pliable protective casing of a SHAFT ASSEMBLY, FLEXIBLE.

CASING,FLEXIBLE SHAFT ASSEMBLY

A round, hollow, flexible item made of closely wound wire, plastic, or other flexible material with connections to permit stationary attachment of each end. It is used to protect and guide the core of a SHAFT ASSEMBLY, FLEXIBLE or CONTROL ASSEMBLY, PUSH-PULL.

SPIDER,DIFFERENTIAL

A spider with four radiating arms, designed to form a connection between two shafts, which allows one shaft to rotate while the other is stopped or rotates at a different speed or direction.

BREATHER

A mechanical device designed to permit a free flow of air into and out of an enclosure, usually used on engine crankcase, vehicular differentials and transmissions, pumps, compressors, and the like. See also CAP, VENT, FUEL STORAGE TANK. excludes VENTALATOR (as modified).

BRAKE DRUM

A circular shaped metal item designed to be connected to a machine or vehicle shaft or wheel and used to retard, stop or prevent motion by the application of pressure exerted by brake(s) or band(s).

LINING,FRICTION

A fibrous and/or metallic material with or without binders and/or compounds, cut or molded to a specific size. It may be a segment or a complete lining. It is usually designed to be fastened to a shoe, disk, band, cone, or the like, but may be installed without fastening. It provides a friction surface for transmitting, retarding, or stopping motion. Excludes LINING MATERIAL, FRICTION.

RING,PISTON

A circular, single or multipiece item, metallic or nonmetallic in composition, designed to be fitted in a circumferential groove in a piston and to spring outward against the cylinder wall to function as a seal or wiper. It is supplied in various cross-sectional shapes and is cut through at one point to allow for installation in the piston ring groove. It may include an expander. Excludes PACKING, PREFORMED; RETAINER, OIL SEAL; RETAINER, PACKING; RING, RETAINING; RING WIPER; and SEAL RING, METAL.

COLLAR,SHAFT

An item designed to be mounted around a shaft to limit axial movement of the shaft and/or its assembled parts. It is secured directly to the shaft by use of a setscrew(s), pin(s), or the like, which may be a part of the item of supply. A pilot hole drilled in or through the wall(s) for drilling and pinning at application may be considered a method of securing. Solid items have a bearing surface on one or both end(s) perpendicular to the axis. For items designed to be mounted around the extended hub portion of a mounted item on a shaft or clamp around a shaft, see CLAMP, HUB. BRAKE LINING KIT

A collection of items consisting of brake linings of specific size(s) together with rivets and/or bolts for fastening the lining to the original brake shoes. Excludes brake shoe kits containing the assembled brake shoes complete with linings, and also brake lining packaged in sheets or rolls.

RING SET,PISTON

Two or more complete RING, PISTON grouped for a single piston or for all pistons of an internal combustion engine, air compressor, or the like.

BALL JOINT

An item in which the end of one member is partly spherical and fits into a corresponding spherical cavity in the other member, thus permitting a relative angular movement. Excludes items specifically designed for vehicular steering and torsion application.

BALL JOINT,DOUBLE

An assembly consisting of two (2) BALL JOINT. Excludes items specifically designed for vehicular steering and torsion application.

RECEIVER-TRANSMITTER,HYDRAULIC CONTROL

An item consisting of one or more hydraulic receivers and transmitters designed to transmit hydraulic pressure from the transmitter to the receiver, for control of mechanical action.

WORM SHAFT

A drive shaft having helical thread(s) on a portion of its outer surface, machined bearing surface(s) and facilities for driving (other than a hub) on one or both ends of shaft. Designed to mate with a cam, gear sector, worm wheel, etc. Includes items with bearings. Excludes items having more than one worm complement of helical threads, items with a separate complement of gear teeth, and GEAR, WORM.

PAD,PEDAL

An item mounted on a PEDAL, CONTROL or other linkage and designed to prevent slipping during actuation by the foot. The item usually consists of a rubber-like material, conforms in shape and size to the item to be covered, and can be replaced if worn.

PEDAL,CONTROL

An item designed for attachment to a control lever, rod, shaft or the like to facilitate foot movement of the control device. Excludes pedals with integral or attached shafts or arms&#59; PAD, PEDAL&#59; PEDAL, BICYCLE&#59; PEDAL, BASS DRUM&#59; and PEDAL, SOCK, HIGH HAT CYMBAL.

LINING MATERIAL,FRICTION

A fibrous and/or metallic material with or without binders and/or compounds woven or molded into roll or sheet form of uniform width and thickness and may be fabricated with or without cork inserts. It is intended as the bulk material from which LINING, FRICTION may be fabricated for use on disks, shoes, or bands to provide a friction surface for transmitting, retarding, or stopping motion.

EXTENSION SHAFT

An item consisting of a length of rigid shafting designed to be coupled to the shaft of items such as variable capacitors, switches, hand cranks and the like. It is specifically designed to increase the length of the original shaft and may also effect a change in the shaft diameter. Includes coupling(s) or has processed end(s) to facilitate the attachment of a coupling device. May have provision for electrically insulating the extension shaft from the other shaft.

END FITTING,FLEXIBLE CORE

An item designed to be permanently secured to the end of a CORE, FLEXIBLE SHAFT ASSEMBLY to provide a means for attaching or engaging with a driving or driven member.

END FITTING,FLEXIBLE CASING

A fitting designed to be secured to the ends of a CASING, FLEXIBLE SHAFT ASSEMBLY to provide a means by which the casing can be attached to the housing of the driving or driven members, either directly or by a coupling nut, or the like. See also FERRULE, ELECTRICAL CONDUIT.

NUT,COUPLING,FLEXIBLE CASING

An item of metallic composition with internal threads and an internal seat or shoulder designed for the purpose of joining a flexible casing, such as a CASING, FLEXIBLE SHAFT ASSEMBLY capped with a ferrule and fitting. See also NUT, COUPLING, ELECTRICAL CONDUIT.

SHAFT ASSEMBLY,FLEXIBLE

An item consisting of a casing with fittings and attachments on each end and a spirally wound wire core with formed end(s) and/or crimped on end fittings. It is designed to transmit rotary motion around bends from a motor or other power source to drive various types of equipment, such as tachometers, speedometers, remote controls, instruments, and the like, which are located at an angle and/or distance from the power source. PLATE,RETAINING,SHAFT

A round, square, or rectangular comparatively flat item having a centrally located hole, designed to accommodate and/or support a shaft. It must have drilled and/or tapped holes for mounting purposes. Excludes RETAINER, PACKING; END BELL, ELECTRICAL ROTATING EQUIPMENT.

SHAFT,DRIVE,FLEXIBLE

CASING,FLEXIBLE CONTROL

A round, hollow, flexible item made of closely wound wire which may have a covering. It is used to serve as a guide and support for push-pull or rotating types of controls for various devices. See also HOSE, METAL. For items with end connections, see CASING, FLEXIBLE SHAFT ASSEMBLY.

ACCUMULATOR,HYDRAULIC

An accumulator in which gases are stored under pressure for momentary energy in a pneumatic system.

CONNECTING LINK,RIGID

An item of various cross-sectional shapes which may be of solid or hollow construction. It is specifically designed for attachment to a lever(s) and/or control(s) to actuate various remote mechanisms. A rigid metal item usually fabricated from steel castings and/or welded steel pieces and designed with one or more hole(s) in line to accompany and hold, align, or support a nonrotating mechanical shaft. It has mounting holes for fastening to a supporting member or main body. It may have provision to accommodate a pin or threaded fastener to hold the shaft in a fixed position.

BRACKET,EYE,ROTATING SHAFT

A rigid metal item usually fabricated from steel castings and/or welded steel pieces and designed with one or more hole(s) in line to accompany and hold, align, or support a mechanical shaft that rotates through an arc not to exceed 360 degrees (6.282 radians). It may have provision to accommodate a bushing or sleeve but usually it has a straight drilled shaft-support hole. Mounting holes are provided for attaching to a supporting member or main body. Excludes HOUSING, BEARING UNIT (as modified).

PLATE,BACKING,BRAKE

A rigid circular shaped metal item with a centrally located aperture. It has mounting holes and is specifically designed to mount and position the components of a BRAKE (as modified). It also serves to prevent dirt and other foreign matter from entering the braking mechanism. Excludes items which are used as a dust shield only.

LEVER,REMOTE CONTROL

A rigid item usually in the form of an arm of various shapes and cross sections, containing two or more holes so spaced that one serves as a pivot with or without hubs and must have a definite means for securing to a shaft (such as threaded hole for set-screw, keyway(s), splines, serrations or some clamping device). The other hole(s) connect(s) to CONNECTING LINK, RIGID; WIRE ROPE ASSEMBLY, SINGLE LEG; or CLEVIS, ROD END; to provide transmission of movement to other parts of the mechanism. See also BELL CRANK. PAWL

A catching device of various shapes and cross sections, which permits motion in only one direction. Designed to engage the teeth or notches of a sector, quadrant, ratchet wheel, or the like. Item is so pivoted that the angle of approach to the interdental engagement causes it to rest more firmly as the reverse load is increased. Item may be spring actuated to cause engagement. Excludes CAM (as modified).

SHAFT,STRAIGHT

A straight shaft having two or more of the following conditions: a specified surface finish designation in the range of 1 to 125 microinches (o.o25 to 3.2 micrometers), arithmetical average (aa), machined peripheral flat(s), circular groove (s), keyway(s), splines, threads, or holes. It is not designed for use in aligning by fitting into corresponding holes of another item. It may be drilled for lubricating holes. DETENT PLATE

A metallic item usually flat, having toothlike projections on the periphery, specifically designed to engage a PAWL for the purpose of regulating and/or locking a brake, clutch lever, or the like, in a definite position.

BELL CRANK

An item in the form of two arms at an angle, having its fulcrum at the apex of the angle, and used to provide a means of changing the direction or varying the intensity of a pushing or pulling force. See also ARM (as modified); and LEVER (as modified).

CAP,GREASE

A cap, usually of metal, designed to retain lubricant and excludes foreign matter from bearings. It is normally used as an end closure on items designed to rotate on a shaft,such as a wheel hub, or fit into a housing at the end of a rotating shaft, or the like. SHAFT,SHOULDERED

A shaft having two or more different diameters (greater than 0.031 inches (0.79 millimeter)) along its length. It must have one or more of the following conditions: a specified surface finish designation in the range 1 to 125 microinches (0.025 to 3.2 micrometers) arithmetical average (AA), machined peripheral flat(s), circular groove(s), keyway(s), splines, threads, or holes. The ends and/or shoulders may be machined to accommodate bearings, couplings, and the like. It is not designed for use in aligning by fitting into corresponding holes of another item. A rigid circular shaped metal item, with a centrally located aperture. It is specifically designed to mount or secure a brake drum to a wheel hub. It is a component of a brake drum. Excludes PLATE, BACKING, BRAKE.

A cylinder designed to house a piston and other necessary component parts of a hydraulic accumulator.

CLAMP,HUB

An item designed to be mounted around the extended hub portion of a gear, wheel, or the like, to retain it securely to a shaft by compressing the slotted hub body. The item may also be used to clamp around a shaft, or the like, to prevent end motion or to retain it in position. Its compression quality is derived from a screw(s) or bolt(s) which may be a part of the item of supply. HUB,BODY

A cylindrical shoulder type item designed to be mounted and secured directly on a shaft or axle to position and retain on its body a gear(s), wheel(s), or the like. Items must have a method of securing directly to the shaft; however, a pilot hole drilled in or through the wall of the shoulder may be considered a method of securing; or by compressing the slotted hub end on the shaft by a hub clamp, which may or may not be included. An item fabricated from a flexible material, to be used in conjunction with an ACCUMULATOR, HYDRAULIC for the purpose of alleviating line shock and to equalize and maintain a predetermined pressure. It may include an integrally molded valve.

BRAKE SHOE

A circular shaped flexible steel device, having a replaceable friction lining, designed to contract upon the outer surface or expand against the inner surface of a drum to retard or stop motion.

DISK BRAKE SHOE

A replaceable metal plate, usually affixed with a fabric friction lining as the contact pad surface. It may be of circular, kidney, or rectangular shape. When mounted in a caliper cylinder housing, between brake disk and hydraulic or pneumatic piston(s), or wheel and caliper lever, it is so designed that actuated pressure, on the shoe friction pad, will retard or stop motion. DISK BRAKE SHOE SET

A group of replacement components consisting of two or more DISK BRAKE SHOE, usually affixed with a fabric friction lining as the contact pad surface. An item designed for mounting on a shaft and having controllable universal action with respect to the shaft. It is used for receiving and transferring camlike action parallel to the shaft.

LEVER,MANUAL CONTROL

A rigid item of various shapes and cross-sections, specifically designed to manually actuate and/or regulate a variety of mechanisms. It usually has an integral handgrip, knob, or the like, or provisions for the mounting of the same. It may have accommodations for locking and/or positioning. The point of fulcrum may be an integral shaft perpendicular to the axis or a through hole to provide a definite means of securing, and usually has additional accommodation(s) for attachment of CONNECTING LINK,RIGID; WIRE ROPE ASSEMBLY,SINGLE LEG; and CLEVIS,ROD END; and the like. CAP,LINEAR ACTUATING CYLINDER

An item designed to attach to and enclose the cylinder bore of a linear actuating cylinder opposite the actuating end. It may have facilities for mounting the actuating cylinder assembly. The item may include ports, valves, and the like. For items on the actuating end, see HEAD, LINEAR ACTUATING CYLINDER.

PISTON,LINEAR ACTUATING CYLINDER

A cylindrical item which moves or reciprocates in a linear actuating cylinder to convert fluid energy to mechanical force. It may include an integral rod.

ROD,PISTON,LINEAR ACTUATING CYLINDER

A cylindrical item with one end designed to mate with the piston of a linear actuating cylinder. The external end is designed for the attachment of a connection or the connection may be an integral part of the rod. The rod is designed to extend through a linear actuating cylinder cap, or the like.

CAP,ACCUMULATOR

A cap having inlet and/or outlet ports. It is designed to mate with the end(s) of a hydraulic or pneumatic accumulator cylinder.

HEAD,LINEAR ACTUATING CYLINDER

An item designed to attach to the actuating end of a linear cylinder. It has an orifice to accommodate a piston rod and packing, bearing, or the like to retain fluid in the cylinder assembly. The item may include ports, valves, and the like. For items opposite the actuating end, see CAP, LINEAR ACTUATING CYLINDER.

DIFFERENTIAL GEAR UNIT

An arrangement of gears in an epicyclic train that connects two shafts in the same line. The driving force is equally divided between the shafts which rotate in different directions with one shaft permitted to revolve faster than the other.

ROD,PISTON,HYDRAULIC ACCUMULATOR

A basically cylindrical item designed to mate with the piston(s) of a hydraulic accumulator.

ADAPTER,SPEEDOMETER-TACHOMETER DRIVE

An adapter designed to attach the speedometer or tachometer drive shaft to the vehicle transmission, engine, or the like.

BRAKE,BAND TYPE

A circular shaped flexible or hinged device, and an attached replaceable friction lining with associated engagement and release linkage. It stops or slows the motion of revolving elements by contracting upon the outer surface or expanding upon the inner surface of a drum.

DIFFUSER,HYDRAULIC FLUID

An item which consists of two concentric tubes with discharge holes. It is mounted in hydraulic circuit tanks to reduce foaming and noise.

DISK BRAKE SET

A group of replacement components consisting of two or more DISK BRAKE.

TENSION SPRING ASSEMBLY

A device that exerts constant mechanical tension or pressure against anothe r item by means of a spring, nut and bolt, arm, roller and the like. This item may include a quick release handle or lever to release tension and allow free travel when necessary for manual operation, adjustment or maintenance.

VANE,PNEUMATIC ROTOR

A wear part of a pneumatic rotor that seals the portion of a pneumatic rotor or impeller receiving the energy of the moving air, or traps the air in a rotary compressor. It separtes the chamber into high pressure and low pressure areas.

An item which constitutes the vibrating element of a VIBRATOR, CONCRETE.

REAR END PLATE,AIR MOTOR

A flat rigid body of uniform thickness retaining the rotor on the end opposite the air inlet of an air motor. It may also contain the exhaust ports.

CONTROL ASSEMBLY,PNEUMATIC

A item generally consisting of a control lever and an pneumatic block containing a distribution slide, a regulating spring, a pusher and the like. It is designed to control pneumatic components such as pumps, motors and distributors and the like.

GEARCASE-MOTOR

An item whose prime motion is produced by an electric motor driving through a geared mechanism which establishes the speed, direction and type of motion produced. The gearing may be integrally housed with the motor or coupled to a separately housed motor. COUPLING,SHAFT,FLEXIBLE

A device for connecting the ends of two shafts so that rotary motion of one shaft is transmitted to the other shaft. It is constructed to allow for slight misalignment of shafts both linear and angular.

GEAR ASSEMBLY,SPEED DECREASER

A group of gear(s) and/or worm(s), of fixed ratio, specifically designed for the purpose of decreasing the speed from the driver(s) to the driven shaft or shafts; having no reversing feature except by reversing the prime mover. See also TRANSMISSION (as modified) and GEARCASE-MOTOR.

A mechanical item used to connect a shaft and the mating member of a flexible or rigid coupling.

An item consisting of a sliding sleeve, finger levers, pins, links, and the like. It is designed to be mounted onto the hub and back plate of a power take-off clutch.

ROTORSEAL,SHAFT

An item which provides a means of transfer of pressurized fluid from a supply component to the exposed end of a rotating shaft or shaft-mounted component. It is specifically designed to permit one section of a coupling to rotate continuously with respect to another without leakage. It may have one or more media connections to allow air or hydraulic fluid to control fluid to machine tools, or lubrication of shaft-mounted components.

GEARBOX ASSEMBLY,STEERING

An assembly of gears and bearings within a housing, specifically designed to change the direction of rotary motion by an angle of zero degrees up to three hundred sixty degrees.

An item having two or more prongs which may have transverse hole(s), slot(s), dowel pin(s), pad(s), in or on the end of each prong, to provide a means to accomplish the engagement or disengagement of gear(s), shaft(s), clutch, or the like. A clutch which transmits motion or power from the driving or field member to the driven or armature member of a nonvehicular item, and whose friction surfaces are drawn and held together by magnetic attraction when electric current is applied.

An internally splined metallic clutch, operating on a splined shaft, designed to transmit motion or power to an abutting shaft by means of engaging the external splines on the driven shaft. Usually manually operated.

A solid circular disk of wire-woven lining material or ceramic and metal substance and the like, molded to one or both sides and fastened directly or indirectly to the center spline or hub, which receives and transmits motion or power by engagement with the pressure plate assembly and the flywheel or the like. Includes dry or wet type disk, and may include damper springs. This item is designed to be used on marine, aircraft, and plant equipment in conjunction with a CLUTCH ASSEMBLY, FRICTION.

TORQUE CONVERTER,NONVEHICULAR

A nonvehicular item designed to transmit rotary motion from a driving member to a driven member through a reaction member(s) by transfer of the kinetic energy of a fluid. It provides automatic selection of the optimum torque conversion ratio with a return to the 1 to 1 state at the earliest possible moment. May have flywheel features and facilities for direct drive.

TRANSMISSION,HYDRAULIC,NONVEHICULAR

A device used on nonvehicular power transmission components to increase torque and/or change ratios between the drive and driven shaft or shafts by the medium of liquid under pressure within the unit. A nonvehicular item with a universal joint on one or both ends. For items with one universal joint, the opposite end may have a yoke, a yoke with a spider, or a shaft. For items without a universal joint see PROPELLER SHAFT (as modified).

YOKE,UNIVERSAL JOINT,NONVEHICULAR

A component of a universal joint designed for nonvehicular applications. Consists of a fork-like device to accommodate the spider and bearings of a universal joint by various attaching methods. The opposite end must have either a flange, hub, or splined stub shaft which is designed to be attached to a driving or driven member. For items with a shaft, the length of the plain portion msut not exceed the length of the splines.

A self-contained power transmitting unit, consisting of an air turbine, gear assembly, ball nut and screw assembly, and control valves. May include power take-off. Designed to convert air pressure to mechanical force in the form of linear mechanical movement.

Two or more types of items having a common mounting or mounted on each other which together form a portion of a GEAR ASSEMBLY,SPEED DECREASER, but which in itself is not a complete functioning item and cannot be assigned a definite item name.

A mechanism having two or more folded or corrugated wall surfaces, which can expand or contract linearly. Converts pressure effects into controlled linear movement or provides a pressure signal to another device. May contain head, caps and/or stem.

SHAFT,AND CLUTCH HALF,POSITIVE

An item consisting of a shaft with an integral CLUTCH HALF, POSITIVE, which is secured to the shaft by means of a pin(s), or the like. The assembly is specifically designed to engage and lock in with other positive clutch halves by a forward or reverse action, which transmits rotary motion to a mechanical device(s).

DRIVE UNIT,HYDRAULIC

A variable speed drive consisting of one or more hydraulic motors and speed reducing gear assemblies integrally mounted and designed to convert hydraulic energy into output shaft torque.

INTERMITTENT DRIVE MECHANISM

A device consisting of a rotating driver and driven wheel which are designed to be mounted on individual shafts. The driver wheel has a protruding bearing mounted eccentrically on its face which is designed to mesh with precision slots in the driven wheel. With each revolution of the driver wheel, the driven wheel rotates intermittently a designated fraction of the 360 degree rotation. The mechanism will rotate in a clockwise or counterclockwise motion.

DRIVE UNIT,ELECTROHYDRAULIC

A constant speed drive consisting of a gear box and electric motor, one or more servo amplifiers (servomotors), and gears, integrally mounted and designed to convert electrohydraulic energy into output shaft torque. The torque output (rotating speed) of the drive depends on the frequency of the power pulses applied through its control assembly.
